What comes to mind when you hear about mental illness, or someone, even a loved one being mentally ill? Webster’s Dictionary defines storm as a disturbance of the normal condition of the atmosphere, manifesting itself by winds of unusual force direction often accompanied by rain, hail, thunder, and lightning. In a similar way, a mental disorder has been described as what goes on in a person’s head, “a storm”, manifesting itself by unusual behavioral patterns. It is an opposing force and affects the normal condition of the brain.
Mental illnesses are known to be medical conditions, not character flaws that affect all ethnic groups. Statistical facts recently reported that one in five adults and children may experience a mental health condition in a given year in our country. Family support is critical in helping our loved ones Walk-n-Wellness!
